Busy day. Mr. Pepe went in for his gas leak check up. Fortunately, it was just a bad valve to the overflow & was easily changed out & done quickly. I managed to get some grocery shopping done while waiting & so, got two things marked off my list for today in one shot.
Once home, I had to make some phone calls. Need to get an electrician out here to check to see if we need to change my room onto 2 circuits instead of just one. Every time my little fridge or the coffee pot cycles, it freaks out the satellite cable. Not that big of a deal for me since I rarely have the TV on, but it is a bit annoying. Made an appointment to get some of the cattle in next week for their freeze branding & to get one mamma's horns trimmed. Poor thing must have a terrible headache since her horns are growing down & pressing on her skull. Am thinking that she needs more than some Tylenol for that pain! Still trying to get pricing for a carport. Will probably end up driving into town tomorrow so that I can stand in front of the guy while he figures the price. It has taken him 2 days to still give me no answer!
All my chores done & so I got to play making another set of wreaths. This time for the front entrance. Couldn't believe that WB suggested it. He liked the other ones so much that he asked if I was going to make more. How could I not??? The original Scrooge wants more Christmas decorations & so he will get them!!
WB has a cold & so our plans to go to Cabela's is probably off. Will see how that goes. If we don't go & we don't have gale force winds, I will wage war on weeds in the yard. At some point, I must attend to the cattle inventory. The records are so messy & don't make any sense to me. Guess that is part of my job...figuring all that stuff out, making sense of it & then translating it to an easily understood document by all who need it.
Eyes getting heavy & feel the need for sleep. No wind chimes to wake me up at the crack of dawn thirty in the morning - yea!

Monday is a Funday
Monday was a fun day on the VW Ranch.
We got a little rain this morning - super fabulously awesome!! Today, we shipped off some more calves for auction, I met with the Direct TV guy, again!, made some barbed-wire wreaths, took more pictures of cows & found this flock of wild turkey while out looking for some of my "missing from inventory" cows. There was another flock already hiding in the gully so there must have been up to 30 of them.
Drove my little mule Pepe around today. That was fun, but he does wreak havoc on my hair. Oh well, the cows, horses, donkeys & turkeys could really care less that I look like I've been playing with electricity! Pepe is back to the hospital again tomorrow though. He has a very small but could be a big deal gas leak. Not sure if it is the line or the tank itself & since I'm not an expert on how to fix it, back he goes to the doctor to get fixed. Will probably be another week before I get him back again!!
Pepe to the hospital, wage war on weeds in the yard & make 2 more wreaths is on my schedule tomorrow. We'll see if I get it all done!!

Christmas Wreath
I made two of these today to flank our cattle guard. WB liked them so much that he wants me to make two more for the front entrance. Must not be too awful because he really doesn't let me decorate too much. We'll probably use our lighted palm tree as our Christmas tree again this year. Guess I'll have to get it naked & dust everything off before redecorating it!

Phrase of the Holiday - No Humping!
Click on the picture to view the web album.
What a fun Thanksgiving holiday with Mike & Elizabeth at their property in west Texas. Charlie & I are babysitting our Houston neighbor's dog, Pippin, & so we, finally, had a 1 to 1 dog to people ratio once Charlie got there on Wednesday night. And yes, there was lots of who is dominate to whom & we were frequently having to break up the humping circle. The 3 big dogs were rough & tumble, but Pippin would get in there to get in her humping. She does have a major Napoleon complex since she is the littlest & wants to be the biggest. Sugar is the grand dame & just looked upon them all with disdain & disgust. We just had to laugh & laugh.
Mike smoked the turkey for about an hour & then into the oven it went on Thursday. Lots of delicious food, watching of football games, the guys went hunting - Charlie got a turkey, Elizabeth & I were reading - a perfect holiday if there ever was one. Naps for everyone after lunch so we could have a second go at our leftovers for dinner. Just as good the second time as it was the first!
Back to the ranch today. Hopefully, we'll get the calves sorted quickly tomorrow morning so that we can go on a trail ride. Not sure how many people are out at the camp ground right now, but there have been lots of trucks & horse trailers coming in all day. Should be quite the ruckus out there tonight & we'll see how many of them are "up & at 'em" tomorrow morning.
Hard to believe today is Friday & we actually still have weekend ahead of us to relax a bit before another busy week starts. Hope everyone has had a wonderful Thanksgiving & has safe travels home.

Heading West
Heading off to west Texas today. Thanksgiving in Eden - sounds perfect. Guess the only other city that could sound better would be Utopia! Looking forward to the cooler weather & warming up next to the old potbelly stove. My sister & I will probably do a lot of reading after all the cooking & clean up is done. Might have to sneak in a nap or two or three or....
Back on the range on Friday. We are going to sort some of the calves on Saturday for sale on Monday plus we are going to have a trail riding group out here & I am just itching to go riding again. Should be lots of fun.
Happy Thanksgiving. Eat, drink & be thankful.

Thanksgiving Comes Early

Yep. It is Thursday
Worked on the commercial herd inventory today & made a good dent in it. Will have some time to work on it again tomorrow & can, hopefully, finish it up by Monday. Fingers crossed y'all. Better yet, hope my left click finger doesn't get a cramp!! Will take a break from it to help sort off some of the calves that we want to sell. Shouldn't take too long, maybe an hour, & extra easy in that they are all in the pens already!!
Rode Ms. Clovis today. She's a sweet little paint pony & we had a nice ride. She got a little skittish on me a couple of times, but no bucking broncos this time - thank God! It does make me want my own horse even more though. We have 5 really nice horses that need someone to ride them, but I just don't trust any of them & really want to forge my own relationship with my own horse. Besides, I would like to have a horse that I can use to work cattle when necessary as well as ride for fun or on a trail ride. No huge hurry & these things can't be rushed. Will not only have to save up for the purchase, but also take my time in selecting the right horse as well as the right horse selecting me! Must be a reciprocal relationship.
I think my NyQuil is kicking in so it is time for this girly to hit the hay. Night night all.

Elvis lives in Vegas & John Wayne in my pasture
This handsome young man is Tracy. I must say that if I were a cow, I'd want to be in his pasture!! He was born on June 13, 2004 which is why he was named Tracy. Trece is Spanish for 13. WB touched him before his momma had a chance to & they have been the best of buds ever since. As an adolescent, Tracy would lay out on his side with all fours stuck out. WB could sit on the ground & Tracy would put his head in WB's lap. Not so sure that is a good idea now & his horns would prevent that any way. He's a bull & not to be completely confused with a pet, but he has a very gentle nature. He sees those of us that are familiar to him & just comes striding over (very JWesque) to get a few scratches on his face & horns, but mainly to see if we have any range cubes for him. To give you an idea of how wide his nose is, I have to feed him with both hands at the same time & he could still swallow them whole!
Super day yesterday. Got all the commercial herd counted, re-tagged & photographed. Now the boring part of updating the computer information. You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both & there you have.....sorry, 80's sitcom flash back moment there. All in a days work though, right folks?
Looking forward to going horseback riding today. I haven't been since my intentional dismount experience last month. Am not scared so much (not that I don't have a new found respect for my equine friends) as I just haven't had time to go & it isn't much fun to go by yourself anyway. Should be a fun morning & the weather should improve as the day goes on. After that, I will have to get on my inventory task. I'd love to knock that out today & have it D-O-N-E!!

Sunrise
My beautiful sunrise this morning. The sky always looks like it is on fire through these trees. Too bad it wasn't as it was a very cold & windy morning.
We didn't have much to do today & so WB made his famous chili. We held back from having it for dinner tonight as it will be so much better tomorrow. Can't rush Frito Pie Perfection! Instead, I made stroganoff with some left over steak - very delish.
I messed around with the donkeys & calves this morning before we went in to town. WB has a new carbine that needed some trigger pull work done. After dropping that off with the gunsmith, we had yummy sandwiches at How I Roll. Very tasty & they have a nice looking salad bar too. Will have to try that next time.
Once home again, it was out to the front entrance to trim some of the low lying branches on the pear trees as they block the view to the road. Now that we are super civilized out here with paved roads & all, people come hauling it around the corner pretty fast. Clipped branches in the burn pile & then off to feed the calves their dinner.
Tomorrow will be a busy day. Working on the commercial herd inventory which will take time as we want a picture of each cow. We also need to re-tag some of the girls who have lost their tags & then there are some who, I don't think, have ever been tagged. We'll wean some more of the larger calves & get the bulls sequestered for the winter. They don't need to be hanging out with the girls again until Spring. If those heifers aren't pregnant by now, they ain't gonna be.
Will have some pictures to share tomorrow.

Work is My Favorite!
Had a great day today. With the cooler wet weather, I took mercy upon the horses & escorted each one of them to the barn for a little breakfast of hay, alfalfa cubes with a little horse feed sprinkled on top. They were quite happy about that. It took a lot of walking to get that done as it takes 10 trips to get them all in the barn & 10 trips to get them back into their pasture.
I guess I felt the need to feed all of the livestock some breakfast so off I went after that to feed the 2 Brahman herds some range cubes. They too got some hay later in the day, but it was an awful cold & wet night not to have a good breakfast - it is the most important meal of the day!
Since I could no longer stand it, I had to straighten up the feed room after all that & it looks much nicer now. It might be so clean that the mice will move on to greener pastures.
WB & I worked on a little project of welding some chain to some horse shoes. I was hoping I'd get to use the arc welder, but no luck there. Not yet anyway. I did get to use the giant grinder to clean up the shoes & chain for a cleaner weld. WB said it would be a hard project for me to start on. I think it was more so that he enjoys welding & didn't want to share his toys!! Oh well, it was fun watching & doing what he'd let me.
Trip into Bastrop for some errands & finally back home by 8pm.
Not sure what tomorrow will bring. I do know I'm meeting the carport guy for an estimate. Other than that, the day is open to all possibilities.

WBs 80th
(Click on the picture to view the web album of the party)
After lots of planning, fretting over the planning, finalizing the planning & implementing the planning, we had a wonderful party. I think everyone who attended had a great time & especially Daddy. I don't think he realized how many wonderful people he has in his life who care about him & were more than happy to celebrate his birthday with him. We are all still wipped out from the festivites & took it easy today. The overcast cold weather made it easy to just relax today.

Finally! November Weather
After a less than Fall weather day yesterday, we had a north wind blow in that dropped the temperature drastically & brought some rain! We should see some nice oats & rye sprouting up soon that the cows will be super happy about eating.
Fairly easy day yesterday. I took a long walk around the pastures in the morning & opened some gates to allow the front Brahman herd easier access to other pastures. Dog greatly enjoyed the walk & collapsed as soon as we got back to the house. Cleaned up the house & finished just in time for my sister to get here. We tried to get our table decorations set up at the Club, but our efforts were thwarted by short staffing issues. Not that much to do anyway so we can just go early today & do all the set up at one time.
We are excited about Daddy's party. Should be lots of fun & will have plenty of pictures to share.

Friday Eve
Can't imagine why I'm so tired. We really didn't do that much today. It must just be because my sweet little Sugar dog had me up at 4:30 to go outside to potty. I guess it is better than the night before when she had me up at 2 & again at 2:30! The things I do for that old lady!
Two trips to town - 1 to drop Dog off for his Pretty Puppy Beauty Parlor appointment & 1 more to pick him up. WB & I also drove in the opposite direction to run some errands in Bastrop. Stopped at the Back Door Cafe in Smithville for lunch - super yummy!! It's located on Main St & has really good food at a super reasonable price.
Other than curling more barbed-wire for table decorations & making sure the apartment was spic & span for my mother-in-law, that was about it for the day.
Tomorrow is a free day as I want WB to be well rested on Saturday for his party. No work for him & by tomorrow afternoon, Elizabeth & I will be getting our decorations out on the tables at the Club.
Good Night to all. WB & I are trying to stay awake until the season premier of Burn Notice at 9. I hope we can make it!! :-)

Happy Veterans Day! Thank you to all the brave men & women whose service provides me with a safe home. My gratitiude extends to all past, present & future Veterans.
My two long-eared friends have been stalking me. For some reason, they think I always have treats for them. That & since they are donkeys, they just like to bite stuff. Gotta make sure to keep all my appendages in tact when these two are around. Donkey Hody is on the left & on the right is Miss Honey.
I tried to match pictures of cows to cows with missing ear tags yesterday. Was able to get a few, but the cow mug book ended in 2005 & we have had a bunch of calves in the past 5 years. We'll now try to get back on track with the mug book. I know it drives the accounting folks crazy that we have missing cows on the inventory. Some may have just lost their ear tags. Others may be dead or decided the grass really was greener on the other side of the fence. Either way, we need to get those who are lost off the inventory.
Hope all have a wonderful day. Regardless of you political opinions, please remember to give thanks to any & all Veterans you see today. If not for them, we would not be enjoying the vast comforts of our free nation.

Yesterday Today
Yesterday was a whirlwind of activity. Off to town first thing in the morning to return the empty fertilizer/seed spreader. We ran a couple of small errands & then back to the house. After we moved 300lbs of feed into the feed room (sounds like a lot but it's only 6 bags!), it was time to get WBs Kubota back on all 4 feet. New tire installed & he was a happy driver again.
Shortly after lunch, I was off to town again to pick up a full fertilizer/seed spreader & had a whole new list of errands to run. I was a little nervous driving the full spreader back home, but I did it! Sounds silly to be nervous about it, but I was driving my dad's truck & hadn't pulled a trailer or any ranch equipment in a really, really long time. Guess it all came back to me fairly easily as I managed to get home without any problems & even backed up the spreader in a good spot to be hooked up to the tractor.
I checked on my little mule Pepe. He had to go back to the doctor as he was still sick. Waiting on 3 more tires & a master cylinder for the brakes. We'll see what other surgery on his brake system he'll need after the MC is installed. Fingers crossed, not too much more so that Pepe can come home!!
WB found one more heifer out back & so we coaxed her to the trap pasture with range cubes. We have a true scavenger hunt to do today in that we saw a cow corpse & need to find the ear tag so we know who kicked the bucket. Always sad to see that as we have no idea how the little lady died.
The sun was setting & the adult Brahman herd was working their way to their night time pasture. I had to take this picture as I know Mom would have loved this scene. "A lovely pastoral scene" is probably what she would have said.

It's Almost Tomorrow
Although I have enjoyed talking to my loved ones on the phone tonight, I have had a phone in my ear since 7:30pm! Am now too tired....must go to bed.
Will give a full scoop on today in the morning. Not sure I can remember what I did today at this point.
Nighty night.

Fun Pix from Today
Picture 1 - Dog & Sugar pre-washing the dinner dishes for me. So cute that they were sharing.
Pictures 2 & 3 - WB & Tracy. That bull is just a big sweetheart. He is ginormous & just walks right up to you. He'll either stick his nose out in case you have a handful of range cubes for him or he'll just put his head down as he does enjoy having his horns, ears & sides of his face scratched. A little scary when this big dude comes John Wayne striding up to you & then is so gentle. Truly amazing.
Reap What You Sow
Super fun start to the day. The Kubota had a flat tire! After running around & getting the air compressor, airing up the tire, driving the Kubota to the shop & jacking it up, removing the tire & finding all the leaks in it, we finally got to start the day! Kubota still out of commission as the tire was too riddled with holes to try to patch ourselves. Since we were heading in to town to pick up a spreader loaded with fertilizer, rye & oat seed, we dropped off the tire for repair.
We have 2 areas fully planted with the rye & oat seed. Praying for more rain so it will all germinate & sprout. We are all ready for another spreader full of seed & fertilizer tomorrow, but there is still plenty of discing (tilling the soil) to be done first. Am sure it will all get done. Maybe at some point I'll get to drive the tractor. I used to use our old one all the time, but am not as proficient with the new one we have. Was standing on the back of it & there is something about the smell of a John Deere that just brings back a lot of really cool childhood memories. Mostly memories of climbing all over the tractor, like a personal jungle gym, while Daddy worked in his workshop. Maybe that is why the smell triggers such strong memories for me. He loved it because we couldn't break anything & we were out from under-foot while he was working.
Once back home, which took forever since we could only drive 40mph on the back roads with a nearly 3 ton load, we were finally able to get truly started with our day. We managed to get the last 3 mommas trapped up. There is still 1 baby left & he/she will probably be standing at the gate bawling its little brains out to get to momma in the morning. Maybe we'll have the neighbors 2 cuckoo cows & calf caught up too.
Drove out back to check our property line fences. So far so good with all the net wire fencing - NO HOGS!!! Those miserable animals tear up the fences & pasture. They aren't even that good to eat which is why they are about as useful as mice & I'm not talking about Cinderella's mice - that is a fairy tale people!! Real mice don't sing nor sew you a party dress for the ball. They might poop on your dress & shred it up for their little mouse condo!! :-)
I am just about give out for the day & am off to try to read at least one whole page of my book before I fall asleep. Night night all.
Oh wait though - I have some cute pictures to post of the dogs sharing a plate & Daddy feeding our most handsome bull, Tracy (he was born on June 13th which is trece in Spanish & so his name became Tracy - aren't you glad you know that???!!)

Back to Work
So busy Friday & this weekend that I haven't been able to blog! The withdrawals were killing me.
Friday was a busy run around day. Finally worked on the gray water line from the wash house & was able to get it mostly working. Charlie found another large blockage in the line on Saturday & fixed it. We now have a fully functioning drain line for the wash water & my shower. YEA! I discovered a huge flaw in WBs yard fencing. I think I walked 3 miles just getting from the line to the hose in the yard to the hose faucet. I asked my dad what was the deal with no extra gates??? Was ready for a nap after my end of the project & it wasn't even 10am!! Will have to tack on to the yard project a few more access gates especially if we are going to move the guinea house & make it into a chicken coop. It will make it much easier to access that part of our 2 acre yard.
I was proud of my cattle calling skills on Friday as I managed to trap up a majority of the commercial herd all by myself. Yee Haws for me!! Over the weekend we were able to get a few more of the stragglers in, but still have 3 mommas, 1 calf of ours & 2 mommas & 1 calf of a neighbors to get called up. It shouldn't be long as I'm sure they are lonely without their friends. Not so sure about the neighbor cows as they are wild as March hares. One of them is really ugly - has little red rabbit eyes. Kind of freaky for a cow.
My sister & I got a bunch of WBs party stuff done. Did a whirlwind shopping excursion on Saturday for party stuff as well as some clothes shopping. Scored well on all fronts. We spent most of Saturday evening curling old rusty barbed-wired around pipes for table decorations for the party. What a mess! Didn't realize how much rust was hitting me & the carpet until we were done & had to clean up the mess. Oh well. Daddy didn't care & we did get it all cleaned up.
Tomorrow is going to be fairly busy. We'll see what all kind of trouble I can get in to & will report in tomorrow evening.

Off With Their Heads!
Today was sunny & bright but windy as downtown Chicago! Can your eyeballs get wind burn??
Not too exciting of a day. Took our out of town visitors around to love on the calves & my favorite bull, Val. They had a great time & got some great pictures to take back home. Hopefully they will come visit again & be able to enjoy a longer visit.
Ever so fortunately, my taxidermist friend Mike decided he'd come out to the ranch to get Mr. Buck's head. Fortunate for us & self serving for him in that he had his niece with him. We had a good time playing with the calves again & messing around with the horses. Told her to bug her Uncle Mike to make sure she'd have time to come out here & ride horses on her next visit. Also good news in the we saw Mrs. Buck this evening. She's not very happy in the pasture by herself & I hope she makes it alright. Black Buck are herding animals so she is going to be very lonely. Makes me a little sad for her.
We wanted to work cattle tomorrow, but that plan was thwarted when Pepe stalled out on me as I was headed out to the back pasture. Thankfully, I wasn't too far out & was able to get back to the house without much trouble. Actually no trouble at all since I had my cell phone & called Mary (our helper's wife) to come get me. No go on getting Pepe started again even with the help of the repair guy. Daddy & I got it loaded up on the trailer & back to the hospital it went. At least now I'll have full brakes & new tires for it. Not sure why those repairs weren't done to begin with, but I was not in charge of this repair project plus we may have had too great of an expectation with the repair folks figuring out all of its problems.
Gray water line in place. Now I just have to flush it out to make sure there aren't any little critters living in there or their homes still in there before attaching it to the drain pipe from the house. Shouldn't be too difficult, but you never know!!
Busy weekend with sister & husband here to help with the final preparations for Daddy's party. Will be fun & tiring, but I'll be very relieved to have all preparations done!!
Until tomorrow. Have a wonderful evening.

Circle of Life is a Big Meanie
Too tired & full to blog last night after a fairly busy day & a wonderful dinner with friends & family.
It is cold & windy so none of us are too anxious about running around outside. The gray water pipe still needs to be attached, but is not a huge emergency. I guess we'll get that done when it gets done. We need to work the commercial cattle again on Friday. I'm hoping we can entice them up as they are way out back. With this weather, they are probably holed up in the trees & won't be easy to find nor coax out into the wind. Will have to get them set up with troughs full of range cubes & maybe some good Kansas alfalfa hay. Wish us luck!!
My title today brings about another topic. Mr & Mrs Black Buck are no longer. Not sure if a predator predated upon them, but Mr Buck is definitely dead as buzzards were circling his carcass yesterday & we have yet to see Mrs Buck. She is either dead somewhere in the pasture or was carried away. Those were the last two we had of the small herd we received a few years ago. Very sad as I did love watching them roam around - they are beautiful animals. The only positive from it is that we can open that pasture up to the cattle now & we can shoot at the backstop close to the house instead of 2 miles away in the back back back pasture. Still, I'm sorry that they are gone.
That also brings about today's chore. Daddy wants to have Mr. Buck's horns mounted. I called a friend who has a taxidermy business &, I guess I knew this was coming but kind of creeped me out anyway, when he said to bring in the head. How else are we going to get the mount done? BUT...that means we have to go chop Mr B's head off & run it in to town. I guess I'll know how strong my stomach is today. I'll either be able to help or I'll be behind a tree puking my guts up! He died Tuesday night, we think, so he ain't smelling too fresh plus the gore of it all. Uck Uck Uck!!! Not looking forward to this task today at all!!! Will soldier up & get it done though. Not sure if I'll take pictures or not. Seems a little gore gratuitous. I'll probably wait until we have the mount. That will be nice & neat & not ucky in any way!! If we can handle it, maybe we get his hide too as he sure was handsome. We'll see how it goes & what I'd have to do to get the hide. May not be worth my nausea!
Stand by & I'll tell you all about it tonight. Hope all have a great day.

It Rained!
Killer cool storm last night. I had to stand in the carport & just watch it pour down & check out the super cool lightening storm. I love night time rain. The world is squeaky clean when you wake up - the air is fresh & crisp, the grass is perky & ,my nephew's favorite part, all the cattle are clean. He was so funny this summer - very upset that they had poop on their hind ends. I tried to explain that they don't really care & don't have access to toilets or toilet paper! A 6 year old mind just can't comprehend that concept, I guess.
WB & I got some good stuff done today. Messed around in the pasture this morning just making sure everyone made it through the storm all right & that we didn't have any trees hit by lightening. Drove to the Polaris dealership to pick up my little mule, Pepe (reference to Romancing The Stone). Once home with it, he got a good bath & I had fun riding around on it. A little chilly, but fun anyway. We replaced the rain gauge since our old one was cracked & didn't hold water. Some neighbors stopped by for a visit while I was fixing supper. They are a sweet couple & I'm glad they popped in for a few.
Tomorrow is going to be a little slower. We now have the coupling to fix the gray water drain pipe & my uncle is coming out for a visit with some friends. Best part about that is that he makes wonderful cocktails & I won't have to cook supper nor clean the kitchen.
Will post a picture of the my little "get around" mobile - Pepe. He is dressed in camo so he may be hard to see!! :-)

Hit the ground running today. Cattle not too cooperative since it seemed like it might rain so they were not up to their usual routine this morning. Easy enough to entice them all in to the pens with some range cubes once we discovered their hideyhole.
Meanwhile, the gray water pipe from the wash house & my shower was crushed & needed to be dug up, cut off & a new pipe attached. Added bonus was a flat on the Kubota. I plugged the hole in the tire & we were back in business.
Managed to get all the front Brahman herd in the pens & start getting those big babies off their mommies. Poor ladies & babies are still up there bawling their brains out. Some are already sounding hoarse from all their hollering.
After a bit of lunch, WB & I dragged a long water line from out back to be used in place of the rigid drain pipe. Now to find a coupling that will join the two different pipes together - not as simple as one might think.
A quick trip in to town & keeping up with RSVPs for WBs birthday party has been the rest of my day. Am totally tired & amazed that it is only 8pm!! Must stay awake for at least another hour before allowing myself to crawl in the bed.
Tomorrow should be an easy day. We are, hopefully, going to go pick up my 4-wheeler!! Will have to post pix.
